Mendenhall Glacier: A frozen expanse larger than the State of Rhode Island. The on-site Visitor’s Center is open daily from May 6 to September 27th. Adults $3. Children 12 and under free. Beginning mid- to late-May, the US Forest Service offers a 1 ½ to 2-hour hike on the Moraine Ecology Trail. Forty-five minute nature walks start at 2 p.m.

Hiking: Juneau has 50 major trails or 120 short walks—the most in Southeast Alaska. Trails vary in difficulty. You’ll need to bring waterproof hiking boots, rain gear, and extra clothing. Trail guides are available at the Forest Service Information Service Information Center in Centennial Hall.

Birdwatching: There are 114 species of birds that nest in Juneau. Roughly 16,000 bald eagles live in Southeast Alaska. They are most frequently spotted near the water, often perched high in a treetop searching for signs of fish. You can often see bald eagles perched right on the hut outside Beachside Villa eating their prey. One of the many advantages to our Juneau Waterfront lodging!

St. Nicholas Orthodox Church: Visit the oldest Russian Orthodox Church in Alaska. Built in 1894. Open in summer—small donations are requested.

Alaskan Brewing Company: Enjoy a free ½ hour tour and a sample of brew. Summer tours begin May 3rd through Sept. 25th. Mon-Saturdays, 11-5. Last tour starts at 4:30. Wintertime tours are offered Thursdays to Saturdays from 11 to 4:30.

Museums: Downtown museums feature an array of artifacts, antiques, art and natural history displayed on a continual basis. The Alaska State Museum is open in the summer 9-6 weekdays and 10-6 weekends. Admission is $4. The Juneau-Douglas City Museum is open 9-5 weekdays and 10 to 5 weekends. Admission is $3. The Last-Chance Mining Museum is a short ride or a 45-minute stroll to the end of Basin Road. As you go, watch for wildlife, such as bear, porcupine and eagles on the surrounding hillsides. Hours are 9:30-12:30 & 3:30-6:30. Admission is $3.

Gold Town Nickelodeon Theater: Watch a movie history of Juneau. Time: ½ hour. Shows are daily on the hour. Price: $5.

Mt. Roberts Tramway: 2,000-foot ride up to the observatory, cafeteria-style restaurant and hiking trails. Native themes accentuate throughout, including carvings and traditional and modern artwork. Adults $19.75. Children ages 7-12, $10.50.

Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure: Ride in covered golf carts through lush gardens and rainforests to the scenic overlook on Thunder Mountain. Guided tours begin May 1 from 9-6 daily. Gift shop and café on site. Adults $14.95. Children $8.95.
